HOLDING Back The Wind

There are moments when life seems to move toward us with a force we can neither see nor control. In Holding Back the Wind, the figure raises both hands as though trying to stop that force before it reaches him. The gesture is defensive, but it is also stubborn. He does not simply surrender to what is coming. The wind becomes more than weather. It can stand for time, change, fear, memory, grief, history—anything that enters our lives without invitation and alters the ground beneath us. We know, of course, that no one can literally hold back the wind. That impossibility is part of the meaning. Still, the instinct to resist remains. For me, the drawing lives in that contradiction: knowing that some things cannot be stopped, yet refusing to meet them without resistance. The hands become a temporary barrier between the figure and whatever is approaching. Whether he succeeds is almost beside the point. What matters is the human need to stand one's ground, even against forces too large to name.
