THE ART OF TYRONE GETER
A Story of Strength, Legacy, and Truth
Tyrone Geter’s art is more than just imagery—it’s a powerful conversation between history, resilience, and the human spirit. Rooted in the strength of his ancestors, his work honors the struggles and triumphs of Black life, the quiet power of women, and the beauty of cultures often overlooked.
From his deeply personal Drawing from the Lifeline series to the unseen portraits of the Fulani people—captured during his seven years in Nigeria—Geter’s work tells stories of endurance, grace, and identity. Each piece is a testament to the weight we carry, the history we inherit, and the voices that demand to be heard.
Whether exploring themes of justice, spirituality, or the everyday resilience of his subjects, Geter’s art is a bridge between past and present. It challenges, celebrates, and, above all, speaks—ensuring that these stories are not just seen, but felt.

Tyrone,
I just got the good news that your painting passed muster (the Collections Committee and the Board) and is being acquired by the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. Because the painting overlaps two departments (Contemporary and American), several curators had to first sign off, then the committee, then the board. EVERYBODY loves your painting! So, you can officially add the MFA to your list of public collections.
On another note, I was one of the proofreaders of the John Wilson publication. I loved seeing that your reflections are included, and I also thought what you wrote about John captured his quiet dignity.
I hope you will be coming to Boston to see the exhibition, and if so, that you will look me up. I am also opening a John Wilson show in my gallery opening February 15, but will be hung by the opening of the MFA's show.
Happy New Year,
